Writing about a musician, my respected friend, is no easy matter. You risk stating the obvious, or even taking up the defence! So, simply and realistically, let us say that Marco Gotti is a “true” musician, instrumentalist, conductor and composer. But, above all, let us say that he is a curious and passionate experimenter. How else can we explain the fact that his creature – the JW Orchestra – has succeeded in prospering (albeit amid the normal vicissitudes, the inevitable ups and downs) for over twenty years, maintaining the same qualities as its founder, continually receiving, transmitting and discovering the stimuli, the research and, before all else, the pleasure of “making music”? This CD is born of the enthusiasm of the JW Orchestra and its leader for jazz, but also for classical music in “transfer” role – all the members of the orchestra have undergone strict academic training. The harmonic structure has its roots and its life-blood in the sole work of importance written for piano by Modest Musorgskij in 1874, an astoundingly original composition with a wealth of innovative details. But the form and language are genuinely those of jazz, admirably supported by the perfect balance between all elements that characterize that music – jazz – which has reached in this very year, 2017, the canonical goal of its first century, so that it may now be legitimately considered “the true contemporary music of our age”. ______________________ Scrivere di un Musicista, stimato amico, non è impegno facile: perché si rischia l’ovvietà se non addirittura l’… apologia! Quindi, semplicemente e realisticamente, diciamo che Marco Gotti è un musicista, strumentista, direttore e compositore “vero” ma, soprattutto, curioso e appassionato sperimentatore. Non altrimenti si spiegherebbe come la sua creatura – la JW Orchestra – sia riuscita a prosperare (sia pure tra normali difficoltà e alternanze) per oltre vent’anni, mantenendo le medesime qualità del proprio fondatore, recependo, diffondendo e trovando con continuità gli stimoli, le ricerche e, in primis, il piacere di “fare Musica”. In questo CD, nato dall’entusiasmo della JW Orchestra e del suo leader per il jazz ma anche per la musica classica in ruolo “transfer” (tutti i componenti l’orchestra provengono da rigorosi studi accademici) l’impianto armonico affonda le radici e trae linfa dall’unico lavoro significativo scritto da Modest Musorgskij per il pianoforte, nel 1874, con sconvolgente novità, ricchezza ed eccezionale originalità; ma la forma, il linguaggio è genuinamente jazzistico, ammirevolmente sorretto dall’equilibrio perfetto di tutti gli elementi che caratterizzano quella musica, per l’appunto il jazz, che – raggiunto ormai proprio in quest’anno 2017 il convenzionale traguardo dei 100 anni di vita – è ora pienamente legittimo considerare “la vera musica contemporanea della nostra epoca”.
