简介
Works was a power-trio from Madison Wisconsin. Formed by members of Blue Ruin in September 1993, brothers Steve (bass) and Jason Goetz (drums) and Eric Johnson (guitar) began to write and rehearsal largely instrumental material that combined modern rock rhythms with 60s/70s psychedelic guitar styles that created a unique hybrid of hard-rock and ambient music. With influences that ranged from the stoner-rock of Kyuss and others, the progressive-rock of Rush, rumba, and middle-eastern melodies, Works honed a series of complex songs that were to make up their only release, 1995′s self-titled debut. The music is razor sharp. Brothers Steve and Jason Goetz are a rhythm section to be taken seriously delivering some serious power grooves. Eric Johnson’s guitar work here ranges from the ambient to fuzz-tone grunge. The ensemble creates a unique sound that uses modern rhythms of alternative rock with 60s/70s experimentation creating heavy-hitting, mostly instrumental progressive rock. Also included with the studio material are three improvised works recorded on different occasions. With monster ‘stoner-rock’ riffs and precise time changes, Works is an impressive achievement. A largely collaborative writing effort, the album flows from section to section, song to song as if telling an imaginative story of conflict and resolve. The collection herein was recorded on the band's four track recorded. Albeit "lo fi," the music shines through the analog cassette format that it was recorded onto. Highly recommended!!
