What people are saying about Concrete: "Worth the wait." "Five out of five stars." "File this album under: Must-listen music." "Elisa's voice is captivating; it pulls you in and speaks to your soul." "Great musical compositions together with lyrical prowess that shines." "Music provides the landscape; setting the mood for the explorations and discoveries that are about to come." "Elisa weaves in and out of genres like knitting the most comforting of musical blankets." "Stirring album filled with solid musicianship, soulful vocals, and well-crafted lyrics. If you like strong, thoughtful music, this one’s for you." "Elisa is opening minds and hearts through music. Let her open yours." Concrete is my first full-production AAA release since Favorite--which CD Baby called "one of the best albums we've ever heard"--and incorporates five years of my best songwriting. It includes a mix of genres that should have something for everyone. I call my music EDGY AND ELEGANT ACOUSTIC AND ROCK, but you'll have to decide where it falls in the intersection between rock, blues, and contemporary folk. Concrete was produced by the grammy-award winning producer, Kevin Bowe, and features performances by Kevin, Alison Scott, Peter Anderson of the Honeydogs, and Steve Price. I include press below, and lyrics after that. Thanks for taking a listen. Cheers, Elisa PRESS REVIEWS OF ELISA'S MUSIC TOP 50 NEW INDIE ARTIST RELEASE PICK: "Elisa Korenne's newest CD, Favorite, couldn't be released on a better-named label. Edgy and Elegant truly describes Favorite, and it's sure to be just that as soon as youlisten. When the opening track crackled with radio static and a hollow sound, I really wondered what I was in for. Then there were layers of drums, guitars, and bass that only accentuated Elisa Korenne's beautiful, mellow vocals. With unique lyrics like 'Twist-tie mouth wrapping up a puckered pout" and a gorgeous a cappella harmony on my person favorite track, 'Instead,' Elisa Korenne's new CD belongs on anyone's must play list." —Singer & Musician Magazine "One of the best albums we've ever heard....With the attitude of female country, the grounded rootsy sound of Americana and the accessibility of folk rock, Elisa Korenne serves up a convincing, professional album that straddles itself between Melissa Etheridge, Aimee Mann, Veruca Salt and Jann Arden. Even while she draws from various genres as different as adult contemporary and Americana country, her sound is cohesive, well-blended and really damn catchy. For those who lean towards adult female rock, this lady has guts, substance and yet, she never loses her elegant touch." —CD Baby "Korenne is like a great trapeze artist, floating effortlessly through a multitude of genres, her superb voice catching her each time with equal ease."[read more] —Indie-music.com "...captivates your eyes and ears..."[read more] —The Aquarian "Elisa's silky voice wraps around driving guitars and soft percussion with equal ease." —The New York Sun, June 24, 2005 " combining the soulfulness of Tori Amos, the gritty pop sensibility of Sheryl Crow and her own distinct personality... Wonderfully emotive vocals and stunning songcrafting both lyrically and musically." —Music Morsels "...stands out [with] husky vocals, engaging lyrics, and catchy melodies..." —Womenfolk.net "Superb, sexy, sultry, and soulful is Elisa Korenne's Favorite. Her vocal strength is outstanding and I would compare it to any female singer-songwriter in existence today. Une grande artiste à découvrir d’urgence."—Crossroads Music Magazine "American star!"—Sligo Weekender, Ireland "Elisa Korenne's rich voice is amazingly addictive." —Pulse Weekly (click to read the review) "...someone we will be hearing more from!"—Ron Olesko, WFDU, Fairfield, NJ "...a step above the singer-songwriters who haunt the city's venues..." —Time Out New York "Bask in the warm glow of rhapsodist Elisa Korenne as her honest vocals offer stories of love and loss. From the first notes of her artful acoustic guitar playing, the rest of the world disappears and you will be captivated by her humble musicality. Reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan's earlier albums, each song is contemplatively revealing. And Korenne's skilled strumming provides a seductive counter-rhythm to every heartache and adventure revealed by her luxurious voice." —Siren Song Magazine (click to read the review) "vocal intensity…lyrics that reflect life." —The Daily Collegian of Penn State University, State College, PA "Of the tens of thousands of shows I have reviewed over the past 25 years, Elisa's music is at the top of the talent list." —Marty Kasamarski, Marty's Bar, Portchester, NY "…set apart from the rest." —Village Voice, New York, NY "Elisa's vocals on [Infatuation] are amazing." —Edge Underground (click to read the review) LYRICS FOR CONCRETE Know Better I know better than to lay my hand on the stove I know better than to lean too far out the window I don’t cross the street without looking both ways So why Don’t I know enough to be careful around you I know better than to dive into a tidal wave I know better than to drive into a hurricane I don’t go wandering in lightning storms So why Am I so drawn to you I should know better I don’t know better Because I know no better No better than you I know better than to dock before the end of the cruise I know better than to stop before seeing the view I don’t stay inside ’cause the water’s too cold So why Don’t I just say yes to you I should know better I don’t know better Because I know no better No better than you I should know better I don’t know better Because I know no better No better than I don’t know any better than No one better than you Concrete Concrete walkways to concrete cells Concrete edges to our hollow shells Concrete wrapped around my feet Concrete Concrete scepter, concrete crown I wish I knew how not to drown In my concrete boat on a concrete sea I’m a concrete refugee I’m not looking for something so hard and fast Or looking to stay just to make it last I’m looking for someone to walk with me On the concrete waters of the concrete sea Concrete mold around my soul Too hardened to move, or too scared to let go Concrete boots, concrete gloves, Concrete dividers between our love It’s the concrete sound of a concrete heart Buried to hide its concrete scars Concrete wagons circling empty rooms Concrete drums beating concrete tattoos I’m not looking for something so hard and fast… Concrete ruffles on concrete beds Concrete muffles what they may have said Concrete shingles on a concrete roof Concrete makes us fireproof Concrete tempest on a rock hard sea Concrete cementing you and me Concrete glistening from too much rain Concrete leads me home again I’m not looking for something so hard and fast Or looking to stay just to make it last I’m looking for someone to walk with me To walk with me To walk with me On the concrete waters of the concrete sea Love to Love This song is based on the life of Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927). She was the first woman to run for president, the first woman to publish a newspaper, and the first woman to own a Wall Street Bank. Above all she was, in her own words, “too many years ahead of this age.” They called me “snake” and “impudent witch” To say free love would save us made me Satan’s bitch In 1866, couldn’t be a feminist I earned myself a fortune and ran twice for president Married three times, and slept with many others I slept with hallowed reverends and I slept with free-love lovers When men can sleep around while saying how much women need’em The first thing women need is sexual freedom I love to be loved as I love when I love I’m gonna be loved as I love when I love If you want to love as I love when I love You gotta be loved as you love when you love Born in a wooden shack in Homer, telling fortunes for my keep My father starved and hit me; doctor wed me at 15 Two kids and one drunk husband, who squandered all our dough I was an actress, whore, and psychic for a Travelling Medicine Show Cornelius Vanderbilt was 76 He got my sister’s and my version of a sexual psychic fix, We asked him for a brokerage house to see what we could get Selling stock’s like telling futures; I made a fortune out of it. I love to be loved as I love when I love I’m gonna be loved as I love when I love If you want to love as I love when I love You gotta be loved as you love when you love Keep It in My Heart When words can’t get through Your secret’s in the way of you Just tell it to me true I’ll keep it in my heart You got nothing to lose You got nothing to prove I’m devoted to you I’ll keep it in my heart I’ll take your burden in cupped hands Hold it gently and understand I won’t make any demands I can share the weight Help you keep it safe Weighs less to me anyway I’ll keep it in my heart Away from prying eyes and thoughts Away from what it cost Regain what you have lost I’ll keep it in my heart I’ll take your burden in cupped hands Hold it gently and understand I won’t make any demands What you carry glints in moonlight It won’t come out till the deep dark night A prison guard is still in prison (beat) Let go of what you’ve hidden What you keep inside keeps you (Time to) release your ghosts Free your shadows, come home You don’t have to be alone I’ll keep it in my heart Put your secret to rest Here beneath my breast Harbored and blessed I’ll keep it in my heart I’ll take your burden in cupped hands I’ll hold it gently and understand I won’t make any demands Color Me In You’re a phrase full of blanks A novel in shorthand I understand I could fill in your blanks I’m an outline in pen Nothing colored within I’m a barely sketched hint You could color me in You be my missing colors I’ll be your missing words If you color me, I’ll color you too I’ll fill you in, if you fill me in too We’ll fill in your blanks No need to say thanks Just take my hand As we fill in your blanks We’ll color me in Eyes, hair, and skin Then we’ll see what’s within When we color me in You be my missing colors I’ll be your missing words If you color me, I’ll color you too I’ll fill you in, if you fill me in too Color me, I’ll color you too Fill me in, and I’ll fill you in too Color me, and I’ll color you in too Lean Into the Curve (It’s coming up too) fast Can’t turn back Too late to break Can’t even fake it Heading straight Now it’s too late Wanna go home Gotta stay on the road Lean into the curve When you’ve lost your nerve Centripetal force will keep you steady Soon you will be ready Ride myself too hard Always on guard Pretend to steer All I do is veer Can’t see past the bend Scared to hit a dead end Gotta let it go Gotta trust in the road Lean into the curve When you’ve lost your nerve Centripetal force will keep you steady Soon you will be ready We’re made to bend So we don’t break We’re make to learn From our mistakes Don’t give up now You’re half way there It’s just another way To get there Lean into the curve When you’ve lost your nerve Centripetal force will keep you steady Soon you will be ready Take Me Slowly Take me slowly, make me want you Slowly, make me need you Let your hands explore, make me beg for more Slowly Take me fully, don’t leave anything behind Fully, I’d rather go completely I’ve got no one else to give to, no one to save myself for Take me Take me Take me lonely, can’t find anyone else to hold me I’m lonely, I’ll take this taking holy Be my savior, take me lonely Take me hard, don’t give me time to recover Take me hard, don’t give me room to breathe Suffocate me, in an embrace that cancels me Take me Take me Take me Take me Yours for a Song I could be yours for a song Been in this window too long With the vintage hats and stained mugs Dusty books and broken toy trucks Improved like wine A better flavor with time Take me home for a song I’m yours for a song I was built to be strong Like antique globes and fondue bowls That old boat motor that will never be sold Made to last A treasure from the past Take me home for a song Treasures can hide in plain sight A trifle’s a prize if you look at it right Once you place me where I belong Everyone will see what you saw Here where I’m yours for a song Come back later, and I may be gone You might spend all life long Trying to find me again Right here I’m yours for a song And if you go wrong It was only a song Only a song Only 100 Miles to Nowhere It's a hundred miles to nowhere And nowhere's where I've been Can't seem to get to somewhere Though I keep trying It's a hundred miles to nowhere To keep going is my curse At least I'm on the run when I'm moving Sitting still would be worse I need to keep on going It's only moving that I feel at home Won't ask for directions I don't want to know the name of this road No, I don't want to know It's a hundred miles to nowhere I feel the fatigue of the road Sleep's always a few miles further I can never lighten my load It's a hundred miles to nowhere They say the journey's the point All I've learned over ten thousand miles Is that what I love, I'll destroy I need to keep on going It's only moving that I feel at home Won't ask for directions I don't want to know the name of this road No, I don't want to know It's a hundred miles to nowhere And nowhere's where I've been Can't seem to get to somewhere And I'm done trying... I need to keep on going It's only moving that I feel at home Won't ask for directions I don't want to know the name of this road No, I don't want to know, I don’t want to know :| I don’t want to know, I don’t want to know, The name of this road Ferris Wheel It’s not about the Ferris Wheel Or the way his hand holds hers It’s not the wind at the top of the world Or the stars that feel so close It’s not the way he leans in To whisper in her ear It’s not the way she looks at him Saying nothing, the meaning clear It’s not about them, it’s about me It’s not how the crowd sounds Far away from high above It’s not the scent of cotton candy Laced with ocean salt It’s not about the room to spread out On a bench made tight for two It’s not how the breeze feels colder Without someone next to you It’s not about that, it’s about me Up for them is down for me If I could stop I’d swing so free It’s peaceful view I see When it’s far away from me It’s not about the bumper cars That crash but never meet It’s not about the flashing arcade Or the kids who keep getting beat It’s not about the hollow music Piped in from the carousel But the wish that I could go Somewhere else (which is really) Not about them, it’s about me It’s not about them, it’s about me. What’s up for them is down for me If I could stop I’d swing so free A peaceful view I see So far away from me Trail of Broken Hearts Behind Me I like to leave a trail of broken hearts behind me That way I know I left them wanting more I like to see them lining up to find me As I sneak out by the other door I like to watch them scrambling for attention While I’m aloof and laissez faire I like to hear them bidding their affections While I’m the one who leaves without a care See them look at you And then make them look again Make them not want to turn away If you’ve got them by the second glance You’ve gotten them to stay. I like to leave a trail of broken hearts behind me That way I’m sure I’m loved and not ignored I always try to keep one man beside me And change them daily so I don’t get bored Don’t give them anything they say they want In fact it’s when you don’t they stick around Don’t loosen your hold till you’re getting gone Then leave them while they’re still bound to you Always keep something hidden Don’t give it all away Keep them in your thrall Line them up and watch them fall You’re sure to make their day I like to leave a trail of broken hearts behind me I like to leave them weeping in the aisles I always leave them wondering how to find me Ready to follow me for miles I wouldn’t counsel you to try my patience My affection for you wouldn’t survive the blow I suggest you learn some toleration And you might postpone the time when I will go See them look at you And make them look again Make them not want to turn away If you’ve got them by the second glance You’ve gotten them to stay. Always keep something hidden Don’t give it all away Keep them in your thrall Line them up and watch them fall You’re sure to make their day A Little Bit of Salt Take the sugar and butter Add the flour and the eggs Some milk and some vanilla But you know you ain’t done yet Cuz if you want to make it sweet Yeah sweet to a fault Don’t forget the key ingredient Don’t forget to add the salt A little bit of salt will make it sweeter A little bit of rain will make it bloom A little bit of sand will make it smoother A little bit of harm can do us good Take a man and take a woman Add some laughter and respect Some love and conversation But you know you ain’t done yet Cuz if you want to make it good The best that you’ve had Gotta learn to compromise Take the good right with the bad A little bit of salt will make it sweeter A little bit of rain will make it bloom A little bit of sand will make it smoother A little bit of harm can do us good
