I've been very fortunate as a songwriter. I never had the biggest fan base. I never drew crowds at clubs. I never got any love from the big publishing houses or labels. Still, I'm the luckiest guy in town because other artists, people I love and respect, have given me the privelege of collaborating with them and recording my songs. When I was just starting out in San Diego's exploding acoustic scene in 1990, I was a homeless addict with a minimum wage job in a small coffeehouse. With the help of a loving God and people who cared enough to reach out, I was able to overcome alot of adversity and make a decent life for myself and my family. Not everyone has the strength, the support or the environment in which to recover from life's trials. MusicCares is an organization that helps musicians who are in crisis to deal with medical, emotional, physical and financial disaster. The artists who performed and donated recordings of these songs did so not to honor me but to help me honor the work of MusiCares (part of the Grammy Foundation) and the creative souls they help.
