“CATastrophe” is the debut EP by Philadelphia genre-crossing rockers Dr. Beardface & the Spaceman. Released almost exactly one year after the band’s inception, “CATastrophe” can be described much like the band itself: at times frantic, stylish, energetic, humorous, melodic and aggressive, but always infused with straight up rock & roll. The EP kicks off with “I Need It,” a contagious track where the male and female singer trade verses like baseball cards. Next comes the radio-friendly “Badlands,” an excursion through the notorious Philadelphia neighborhood known for its low morals and high police presence. The tongue-in-cheek “Shrink Rap” is next, which tells the story of one of the band member’s encounter with a psychiatrist in rehab. Sweet-sounding “Angel” and the energetic punk anthem “Lickety Split” wrap up the album, their diversity and the counterbalance between the two songs perhaps the best analogy to the band’s propensity to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
