How might living through a period of spiritual awakening impact us personally? Here are 10 new worship songs that could serve as a personal commentary during such a season of time. Many of us have been praying for years for healing to come to our broken society, asking for a powerful new move of God’s Holy Spirit that could bring meaning to those who have lost their way; hope for those without hope, and a chance for freedom and a new beginning for those who have been carrying so much baggage in their lives from deeply wounding and destructive past experiences and circumstances. It would be nice to think that those of us who call ourselves Christian believers in the church have been immune from all of these problems ...but unfortunately that would not be true. Is it revival we are looking for? I believe it is. Maybe a new season of God’s grace is about to come, a time where he plans to shower His mercy on us instead of the judgement we deserve. When it comes I don’t know if it will be quite what we expect, or if it will take the form and shape of experiences we’ve had in the past. I’m not even sure that it will be quite as simple or straightforward as the joyful season of time I have occasionally been tempted to imagine. After all, it’s not all that easy to say goodbye to old attitudes and thought processes, even when we are being offered the chance to become a ‘new creation’ in God, or to be ‘transformed by the renewal of our minds’. I wrote these songs over a two year period between 2009 and 2011. In ‘Holy, holy’, God is Creator of the world, majestic, awesome, infinite; eternal. How could we hope to know Him or draw close to Him? And yet, ‘Here in this place’ speaks of a God who meets with us when the church is gathered together as family; miracles can happen in an actual physical place where those being prayed for can be standing, sitting or kneeling. When we linger in God’s presence it can sometimes awaken a deep sense of our own shortcomings and weaknesses; ‘Change me’ speaks about this. ‘I made a promise’ simply reflects that being a disciple of Jesus is a lifelong commitment. As a young person being baptised or confirmed, you can’t know how life’s experiences ahead will test that commitment, but at any age we need to be reminded that we made a promise to God and that He can provide the help we need to fulfil that commitment. Finally, what will it feel like when the presence of God comes in power to touch our lives, our community and even our nation? What does God’s mercy feel like? ‘Mercy is falling’ tries to catch a glimpse of an energy; an effervescence that flows and fills us completely. God’s mercy is gentle, comforting; but it is also awesome and overwhelming. The presence of God might be challenging and uncomfortable at times, but it is also a place of great joy, freedom and fulfillment. I hope these songs will draw you closer to His presence and give you a glimpse of that future to come!
