"You could say that the new Blue Hook album is a community project. The band made an appearance in TCP's music guide last year, wowing us with their demo. A year later, the boys are back, with a perfectly packaged deal. It's a sound unique to Northwest Ohio, and Motor Oil & Whiskey consists of 13 tracks that won't let you down," Emily Rippe, The City Paper. "Motor Oil & Whiskey" was recorded from January, 2007 to June, 2009 at Zeta Recording Studio in Toledo, Ohio. 13 different musicians played on the album. Chis Stoll served as the engineer and AJ Szozda produced. A Note from AJ: The goal was to make something that was unexpected to the ear, something that was memorable but new. I wanted to use interesting arrangements and instrument combinations. Different players with different styles carefully put together with the right song. Some of the songs came from countless live jams and some were created on the spot in the studio. Some great performances from some of my favorite musicians were captured here. I am grateful for their inspiration. The hope was to make something that was timeless, something greater than the sum of its parts. The album was built piece by piece from the ground up, every song unique and complete, yet tied together. The goal was to make a complete album, like the many vinyl masterpieces in my extensive collection. This was my attempt to bring back some of the things that make music so powerful, and hopefully inspire someone else to make something better.
