Secret 9 is Barry Coates: Guitar Synth, Mark Hatch: Trumpet, Flugel, EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) Casey Scheuerell: Drums, Jimmy Haslip: Electric Bass, Larry Steen: Acoustic Bass. While these tracks sound as current as anything out there, they were actually recorded as a private in-house project back in 1990, and have never been released until now. Secret 9 features a unique mix of acoustic and electric instruments, and covers a lot of musical ground from the classic jazz tradition to the territory explored by Weather Report , Pat Metheny, etc. Featuring all original compositions by its members, the band’s sound is unique, and further defined by the extensive use of Coates guitar synth, and Hatch’s EVI. Drummer Casey Scheuerell, in tandem with either Haslip or Steen, offer the perfect mix of groove, fire, and rhythmic exploration. The end result is a band that sounds like “a band”, with its own unique voice, vibe, and sound. With the release of these tracks, Secret 9 isn’t a secret anymore.
