简介

Sponge has proven to be one of the Motor City's heaviest hitters after gaining international notoriety with their debut album "Rotting Piñata” (Sony). Emerging from Detroit with hits like "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles)" Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV. Both “Plowed” and “Molly” hit #5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Charts, catapulting “Rotting Piñata” to Gold, and ultimately Platinum status. Sponge's follow up CD, the critically lauded “Wax Ecstatic” (Columbia) scored additional top ten Billboard hits including "Wax Ecstatic" and "Have You Seen Mary?" The band’s music was also featured in popular movies “The Craft,” “Chasing Amy,” “Mall Rats” and “Empire Records.” Sponge’s star continued to rise with network appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Conan O’Brien Show.” Sponge’s subsequent releases “New Pop Sunday,” “For All The Drugs in The World,” “The Man,” “Galore Galore,” and “Destroy the Boy,” showcased the band’s swirling sonic attack, rooted in 70's glam and of course, the Motor City influences of The Stooges, The MC5 and Motown-but still sounding distinctly like no one else. “Plowed” continues to be the band’s signature rock track, having been spotlighted on Guitar Hero’s “Warriors of Rock – 90’s Rock Track Pack” – and on the Paper Jamz Guitar Series 2, in addition to the soundtrack for the Gerard Butler surf movie “Chasing Mavericks.” Sponge is now touring in support of a brand new release – “Stop the Bleeding.” The full-length disc incorporates the traditional “Sponge sound” in addition to exploring edgier, industrial grooves, most apparent on the band’s twisted cover of “Time in a Bottle.” Having shared stages the world over with Guns N’ Roses, Nickelback, Iggy Pop, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Kiss, to name just a few, Sponge continues to be one of rock’s most sought after live acts. Front man Vinnie Dombroski captivates audiences with his powerful voice, heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics and high-octane stage presence. Now as part of the stellar Summerland Tour – hitting sheds and amphitheatres across the U.S. this summer, Sponge is poised to bring its potent brand of Detroit rock to the masses, once again proving that rock never stops. They stay true and come through with some great songs, maybe some of the best songs of their career. Suicide Away is awesome, sanitarium is great when the drums kick in, unpopular girl has the classic sponge guitar sound, and dandelions roar and love & roses will satisfy fans of older songs such as have you seen mary, velveteen, molly, etc. the album also has some experimental songs that turn out decently, including treat me wrong which sounds like softcore punk with powerchords, and lucifer in las vegas mixes in western country flavor. 28 days is a rocker like wax ecstatic, but for some reason it falls short. punch in the nose is a great song too By A Customer Format:Audio CD "Drugs" is an amazing return to the tasty rock that Sponge spoon fed us back on Rotting Pinata and Wax Ecstatic. It's safe to say that you will not likely find this disc in the bargain bin at your local used cd shack. You won't be trading this phenomenal aural treat "for all the drugs in the world." Every single track is strong. "28 days" threatens to eclipse "wax ecstatic" as Sponge's best steel-toed, [good] rock anthem (talk about being force fed...and you'll like it). "Burn" is a provacative rock ballad complete with lyrics "borrowed" from a Catholic Mass! "Talk to you " is erily Nivanna-ish. "Punch in the nose" got a little update from the ep. The lyric "you make me wanna hurt you" becomes "I could never hurt you". Smart move. (but if you are feeling particularly angst-ridden...pop in the ep-version). Buy this cd and buy one for a friend. Music this damn good is destined to make more than a few record execs kick themselves for dropping Sponge from their labels. Support this amazing album and band! Even Jesus couldn't resist quenching His thirst with this gaul-ladden Sponge offering. Soak it up! By josher30 - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (MP3 Music) This is exactly what I've been looking for. It gave me flashbacks of seeing them live in 99. This album made wish I could travel back in to time just for that concert. If your a fan of Sponge you wont be disappointed. By Metal Pete (Florida) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (Audio CD) This CD is solid, and worthy of picking up. Sponge stays fairly true to their sound, but true to their nature they do explore a bit too. It all works, cuz this is Vin on vocals and pretty much the original band giving their all. They understand melody and have soul --they write meaningful lyrics. They've got something to say, and it is worth it to listen in. This disc is only slightly grittier than 'New Pop Sunday'(a great album) but this raw emotion is why we liked Sponge in the first place. We liked them right away for the all time gem that is 'Plowed'. If you like that song and have wondered what Sponge did later on, then you should get this. They are still a great band here. Sponge is no one-hit wonder. Turn off that crappy radio station and put this disc in, and remember the good stuff. By J. Miller "Mean Master" (Earth) - See all my reviews This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (Audio CD) This would be the second most experimental album by Sponge. It comes in second only to Wax Ecstatic, which went way out there with slow introductions, strange endings, longe bridges preceeding choruses, and additional instruments like the piano and the saxaphone. On this one though, it was more the pace of the songs that varied. "Treat Me Wrong" is infectous and slightly vulgar. "28 Days" is edgy and raw and sounds even more so in concert. "Unpopular Girl" and "Suicide Away" are more slow and melodic. One thing you will find on this record is lyrics that are captivating, circle around the point, and explain things in backward ways (just like I like it--the truth is not that easy to take in head on). Some things you will not find on this record are too many instruments, too much backup vocals, and extra noises. This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (Audio CD) I only recently purchased and listened to this cd. Like a review previous to mine, I totally let this Sponge cd pass me by and had no idea they even released it until I did a search here on Amazon. The songs are great and remind me a lot of Rotting Pinata - my favorite Sponge cd. Unpopular Girl, Dandelions Roar and Suicide Away take the cake on this one. If you like Sponge this one wont dissapoint you. I wish these guys would come to California a little more often. I only recall one trip through in the past 8 years and wasn't able to catch any shows. I really like these guys. By B. Stinnett "bstinnet" (lexington, ky) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (Audio CD) First off i was extremely please to recieve this cd in the mail only one day after i ordered it. And it could not have come at a better time. I have been listening to sponge since "rotting pinatta" was released. And i have to say the new cd is by far the best since pinatta. I had the chance to see this group last summer. And i was blown away at the emotion that vinnie gave off to the crowd. Especiallt when introducing the song "punch in the nose". Like myself this review is for any long time sponge fan that is pleased to see that the boys from Detroit are still rocking. Rock on vinnie~ By Mark C Wisniewski (Ferndale, MI United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: For All The Drugs In The World (Audio CD) First of all, I'd like to point out that the SOUND of this cd is exceptional; full and beefy. The drums kick you in the teeth, the guitars are LOUD and Vinnie's voice has never sounded better. I was skeptical about the quality, because Sponge is indie now and I didn't know what to expect. But man, this IS their best sounding record. Made in Detroit!! And a continuation of great songwriting from Vinnie and Joey. Lots of rawk on this cd including "the single" Treat Me Wrong (wow!!), 28 Days (unbelievable!), Unpopular Girl, etc...There was always something about the Sponge guitar sound that I always loved; the chord changes, the thick tones, Naylor amplification, etc...That is still a part of their sound on this recording. But I really want to mention that there are some ballad-ish songs on this record that I absolutely love. "Burn"......wow....just listen to it! The words are great,"...in this life we all burn","blessed be the peacemakers". Amen. I think my favorite song is "Love And Roses", written by Vinnie alone. Beautiful piano by Chris Codish, who also played on Wax Ecstatic. Love the words, even if sometimes I can't understand what the heck he is singing. I dig it. "Punch In The Nose" is funny but sad at the same time: "You can punch me in the nose, you can punch me in the chin, but if you punch me in the heart, that's a fight I'll never win." Ouch. This is a new lineup for Sponge. Vinnie and Joey are the only original members who play on this cd. The new drummer and bassist rule though. IN FACT, I saw them live and Joey Mazzola is not with them anymore either, which is a drag, but they are still fantastic with new guitarists Andy Patalan and Kyle Neely (from Throttlebody and Solid Frog). Anyway, great album. Catch them live if you can. Buy this cd now!! I only gave it 4 stars because it's so new to me. But the true test for any recording is if the songs keep running through your head and you keep playing it; which I do. I'm addicted to this.
