It was interesting doing a film about one song. The challenge for Ken Spurgeon and me was to find other music that fit with “Home on the Range,” both sonically and thematically. KANSAS The group, KANSAS, originally from Topeka, is a successful rock band that first became prominent in the 1970s. Their hits include such classics as “Carry On Wayward Son,” “Point of Know Return” and “Dust in the Wind.” Michael Martin Murphey America’s #1 cowboy singer, best known for his huge hit, “Wildfire,” Michael Martin Murphey has contributed to the soundtracks of dozens of movies and TV shows. Michael included the song, “Home on the Range” on his 1990 album, Cowboy Songs¸ considered by many as the album that brought about the revival of cowboy music. Sons of the Pioneers The Sons of the Pioneers are America’s premiere Western Music band. Formed by Roy Rogers in 1934, the group is the longest, continuously performing band in the nation. They are in both the Western Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. John McEuen A founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John McEuen is one of America’s most versatile musicians. He is also an award winning producer, whose works include a Grammy award winning album for Steve Martin and the Western Heritage Award winning soundtrack album, The Wild West. Mathew Greer Mathew Greer is a wonderful character actor, who has had success on the big screen in such films as No Country for Old Men, The Last Stand, Bernie, and The Mist. In Home on the Range, Mathew portrays Bill Jack Curry, the old trail cook who once rode with Sam Bass. Skip Gorman In Home on the Range, Skip Gorman portrays Roy Faulkner, the Lonesome Cowboy on KFBI Radio in Abilene, Kansas. Skip is a full-time cowboy singer and old-time fiddler, who sings the songs of the old-time working cowboys. Documentary filmmaker, Ken Burns, has featured Skip’s music in Lewis and Clark, Baseball, Dust Bowl Days and National Parks. Jed Marum, with Jay Ungar & Molly Mason Jed Marum is a singer/songwriter from Dallas, Texas who performs American Roots and Celtic Music. His music has been featured in other Lone Chimney Films, including Bloody Dawn and the Western Heritage Award Winning Road to Valhalla. Besides having his music in Home on the Range, Jed also appears as the banjo player in Roy Faulkner’s band. Rob Loren For three years, Rob was a member of Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys. He has also worked with Charlie Daniels, Merle Haggard, Michael Martin Murphey, Hank Thompson, and many others. Besides his various contributions to this Home on the Range soundtrack album, Rob is also in the film as a member of Roy Faulkner’s band. Ranger Stan Greer Former Kansas State Mandolin Champion, Ranger Stan is a member of two “Ranger” bands, the Prairie Rose Rangers and the Home Rangers. In Home on the Range, Ranger Stan is the mandolin player in Roy Faulkner’s band. McKinney Sisters Daryl, Randyl and Mikyl McKinney began playing bluegrass and gospel music in their home state of Kansas in 2012. In Home on the Range, the McKinney’s portray a typical sister trio of the 1930s. Noah Trammell Noah is a writer and teacher living in Wichita. He teaches at Northfield School of the Liberal Arts and studies creative writing and philosophy at Wichita State University. In the film, Noah plays the part of Dan Kelley, who first set Dr. Higley’s poem, “Western Home,” to music. Elenia Henry Elenia sings at various venues around Kansas with her sisters, Emily and Anna. Lanie loves playing the double bass and can be found most days lettering and painting with watercolor. In the flim, Lanie portrays young Virgie Harlan, who sang with Dan Kelley. Roy Faulkner Known on the radio as the Lonesome Cowboy, Roy Faulkner was one of the early cowboy singers on radio. He gained national fame as the singing cowboy on KFKB in Milford, Kansas. Though Roy never made any commercial recordings, we are pleased to include one of his home recordings on this album. Connie Dover Connie Dover is a Kansas City singer/songwriter who performs Celtic and American folk music. She has performed on NPR's Weekend Edition, A Prairie Home Companion, The Thistle & Shamrock, Mountain Stage and E-Town. Cherokee Maidens The Cherokee Maidens are Robin Macy, Monica Taylor Johnson, and Jennifer Pettersen Melcher. With their band, Sycamore Swing, they perform Western Swing with the vocal sounds of the classic trios like the Andrew Sisters.
