"Solitary Refinement" "...is the blueprint for everything that Brenda has been through and dreamed of, and lost and gained. You can hear, see, and feel all of that both in her voice, and in the arrangements." says Brian Frederick, Carsey’s current producer and sound engineer on her new record, who’s worked with names like DJ Quik, Whiz Khalifa, Isabella Summers (the Machine of Florence + the Machine) and even the Backstreet Boys on their 20th anniversary record." - Cheantay Jensen for The Edge LB This album is Brenda Carsey's first full-length studio album. This album can sonically be described as 'Alternative Soul', a genre created by Carsey to describe the strong soulful emotions from her vocals and the wide variety of other musical ingredients of her music. "Solitary Refinement" is a sort of modern twist on a 1970s soul album with rock, pop, and heavy jazz influences. The songs are extraordinarily honest, exposed, and keep the listener guessing. There is a feeling of freedom, poetic lyrics accompanied by fluid melodies, engaging chord progressions, funky rhythms, and a voice filled with passion and soul. Co-produced by Brenda Carsey and Brian Frederick Engineered and mixed by Brian Frederick Lyrics, melody, and music written by Brenda Carsey vocals, piano - Brenda Carsey bass - Andy Goettsch drums - Matt Brundrett guitar - Liam Kevany trumpet - Matt Schulman tenor sax - Joseph Schmeltzer baritone sax - Soul Station #1 violin - Will Arnold cello - Jean-Paul Barjon Album artwork by Jess Giles shot in 35mm film Huge thank you to the 168 people who contributed to making this album possible! I could not have done it without your support and belief! Brenda Carsey is a Los Angeles-based vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Carsey has been performing since the age of five, from choirs, orchestras, and marching bands to national anthem performances to rock, pop, folk, hip hop, and electronic groups (Feral Kizzy, Centuries, Cesar Saez), stage shows (Cabaret Versatile), and solo projects (Brenda Carsey & the Awe, Side Show, eminent.ruth). Carsey's primary self-accompanying instruments are piano/keys and acoustic guitar. You can currently catch her out playing live solo and with her band Brenda Carsey & the Awe. Brenda Carsey & the Awe deliver a funky, energetic show, seamlessly mixing a unique blend of Alternative Soul, R&B, and Progressive Trip Hop. The group is led by songstress and keyboardist Brenda Carsey and grooved out by the Awe-some rhythm section featuring Matthew Brundrett on drums and Andy Goettsch on bass. The band additionally sometimes features other instruments such as guitar, horns, and strings. Carsey’s Voice is, in a word, uninhibited, mixing a syrupy sweet sound with a beautiful darkness and a vocal range with a potential of virtuosity. This Los Angeles, CA based group has grooved and swooned on the stages of The Hotel Cafe, The Teragram Ballroom, Mrs. Fish, Good Times at Davey Wayne's, Harvard & Stone, The Federal Bar, The Lost Knight, and The Virgil (to name a few). They have played at Feed LA Festival (2016), Echo Park Rising Festival (2014, 2015, 2016), and they will be making their first appearance at the heavy hitting music festival Lightning in a Bottle this year (2017)! They will stop you in your tracks with poetic lyrics, fluid melodies, engaging chords progressions, funky rhythms, and a voice filled with passion and soul.
