Victor Hugo once said that “music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” For singer/songwriter Selena Seballo, there is no parallel to the power of music. Her sound is fresh and rejuvenating. Sultry. Intoxicating. Most unique is the way in which her songs mirror her integrity as an artist and person. Born November 6, 1980, Selena Seballo was raised on the classical, jazz, country, and gospel music that was perpetually played in her parents’ Orlando, Florida home. In 4th grade she discovered R&B and hip hop and found herself hooked on Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She also fell in love with Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and the music of Ella Fitzgerald. Quick to lead out in school and eager to be in the spotlight, Selena felt a pull even in grade school to express herself creatively. A professional actor, her father also played in a popular band called “The Exits” in the 1960s and 70s in Manchester, England. With both music and acting in her blood, Selena took to the stage early on, first with piano. “I had terrible stage fright playing the piano –to the point where I stopped playing all together.” Singing seemed less stressful, and by the time she entered the 9th grade it seemed divine intervention came into play. Selena began singing regularly at school and church events and was rocked by the staggeringly positive response to her voice. Encouraged strongly by her choir teacher, she began giving a career in music serious thought. After graduation she picked up the guitar and prayed for the ability to express her thoughts and ideas in song. “It was a huge challenge at first, but miraculously it came together my last year of college.” Today Selena is blessed to be able to write songs for not only herself, but other artists as well. In her self-titled debut album, Selena’s song topics range from personal passions, beliefs, and thoughts on God, to her concerns, frustrations, and angst regarding the world around her. The overall tone, however, is one that uplifts. “I want my listeners to feel like their spirit and mind has been revived. I want them to feel renewed or even nostalgic.” Selena’s style is a little harder to nail down. Generally referred to as a mix of jazz and neo-soul, her songs implement gospel, country, and even reggae sounds as well. Unlike some artists that rely on studio mixing for their edge, Selena is electrifying on stage. Performing live is Selena’s greatest gift. Anyone that has witnessed her sing agrees that her ability to captivate her audience is truly amazing. She says that it is only on stage that she feels completely uninhibited. “It’s where I feel closest to God.” In 2006 Selena established Bello Entertainment, LLC under which she released her self-titled debut album. “My immediate goal for now is to successfully sell my music and do what I do best, which is perform.” After establishing herself as a respected artist and songwriter, Selena hopes to broaden Bello’s horizons to include meaningful, beautiful entertainment associated with several mediums including music, film and stage productions.
