The village of Sventaja, on the Sventava River and Lithuania's Baltic shore, is inhabited by Latvians who enjoy singing and dancing. These Kurzemnieki (Courlanders) have not forgotten their ancestors' songs in spite of separation from Latvia since 1921 when an agreement shifted the border, leaving them in Lithuania. The dozen tracks on this album represent Sventajas Latvian folkloric heritage, documented before the turn of the century. Muktupavels' original arrangements attest the viability of these songs in the present.
