Recommended downloads: Track 2) Sad Ape Track 7) Lady Luck Track 14) Ill Filling In 1993 the journey began with a group in small town British Columbia called the dead MCs'. It was then that a man who would come to be known as Planit (AKA The Sad Ape) formed his style of raw lyrics and poetic genius. In 1996, Planit moved to big city Alberta and with the inspiration of Kool Moe D, 3rd Bass, the Beatles and Portishead formed an ever deepening style. In 1998 he joined forces with AlterOne and Calgary DJ Cadillak Kid to form a group called the Ill Natured Freshmen. Like many underground hip hoppers before them, they first arrived on the scene in the form of self produced 4 track tapes and home recordings. Not being satisfied as a top-notch freestyler and lo-fi recording artist, Planit hooked up with the boys at Olive Hour Records and made his debut in 2004 with an album that sent shock-waves through the Western Canadian rap scene, the album was called “Onword”. Planit started to appear regularly in local clubs like the Bamboo and the Den on the campus of the University of Calgary among countless shows where he continues to be a strong draw. Planit has released 4 independent albums to date; Missing2wisemen, Hours Spent, Onword (Olive Hour) and this years The Whole Process of Things (Olive Hour). Since '04, Planit has made serious strides in his music career. During the summer he opened for Canadian icons Swollen Members, Abstract Rude and Mind-bender as well as touring with Juno Winner Leroy Brown. Planit is the rapper that has been dubbed the “Milt Stegall of hip hop” by Epic, one of Canada's hip hop legends. Now, I don’t know if Planit ran 1896 yards in 2002, but he definitely runs laps around sub-par rappers with every song he’s on. Planit is a man who has been dedicated to the scene for more than a decade. Today, Planit not only focuses on his own music, he also puts his energy into the scene itself. He is now the co-owner of Calgary’s original grass-roots hip hop clothing/record/CD/accessory store and he is adding to the foundations of a deep-rooted hip hop community with concrete progress. Planit is a warm individual who puts his heart into everything he does, especially his music and it shows. The whole Process of Things is sure to breach the prairie’s boundaries and fill the world with the creative and original soul of the Sad Ape.
