简介
Meet new artist Damita, who makes a debut splash with R&B as ready for the rest of the world as it is for church folk. Fans of edgier soul gospel may know of her husband, choir director Deitrick Haddon. Though Mrs. Haddon benefits from her other half's powerful songwriting and up-to-the-minute production finesse, no one else involved with the record upstages this vocalist. Damita nails the 13 tunes here with a clarion, empathetic vocal tone other female R&B newcomers might wish they possessed. Moreover, the lyrics give Damita grist for thought, and the melodies here challenge her instrument while remaining accessible to a wide soul music audience. Mid-tempo opener "Why" may confront spiritual idolatry as much as it does illicit romance. Toby McKeehan of dc Talk gives a rap cameo to the rocking "Truth," and "Hold on to Your Faith" gives Damita a choral backing to scintillating rhythmic effect. Slower beats-per-minute provide an equally fine showcase for Damita's vocals. A duet with Deitrick on "The Wedding Song" has radio hit written all over it. "Calvary" and "Holdin' On," among others, distinguish her way with urbane mellowness, too. In a year overflowing with quality Christian R&B such as this one, it would be easy to take a premiere like Damita for granted. That would be an awfully big mistake.
