Love Spirals Downwards' sole CD single from 1996 has long been out of print, and this hypnotic trip hop remix of "Sideways Forest" hasn't been previously available digitally. The B-side instrumental, "Amarillo," was included on the band's year 2000 career retrospective collection, 'Temporal,' while the original version of "Sideways Forest" hails from the 1996 album, 'Ever.' The bonus track "Sideways Forest (Acoustic Mix)" was just unearthed from the band's vault, never having been available in ANY format until now. Same goes for the live version of the "Quantum Remix" -- aside from the privileged few in the audience the night that it was performed at ProjektFest Chicago back in 1997. The original album mix of "Sideways Forest" from the 1996 album, 'Ever,' is a wistful mix of folky acoustic and ambient trip hop vibes graced by bittersweet vocals. The "Quantum Remix" created by band leader, Ryan Lum, amplifies the electronic aspects of the original song, stripping out the acoustic guitar and minimizing Suzanne Perry's dreamy vocals to just half the original verses and chorus, oddly omitting the song title. The resultant blend of mid tempo electronica and whispery female vocals is reminiscent of Perfume Tree. Minus the bass and drums, the stripped down "Acoustic Mix" focuses on Suzanne's plaintive vocal and Ryan's wistful acoustic guitar, with splashes of electric guitar just in the choruses. The live recording of the "Quantum Mix" is a charming version with some interesting melodic additions to Suzanne's original vocal lines, including the lyrics which provide the song title which Ryan had omitted in his remixed version.
