Joana Rios began her professional career at age seventeen starting out by singing jazz and bossa nova standards. Her first musical school was the Amateurs of Music Academy in Lisbon followed by the National Conservatory and the Hot Club’s of Portugal Luis Villas-Boas Jazz school where she also has taught since 2002. In 2005, she premiered with “Joana Rios sings Ella Fitzgerald Live at the Hot Club,” a record which received excellent reviews and whose sales allowed the record to peak at Fnac’s Top of Jazz for several weeks. The “Joana Rios sings Ella Fitzgerald” tour was comprised of about fifty shows across the country, held at some of Portugal’s most important venues and festivals. The tour also included an international debut with three breathtaking shows in Luanda, Angola. In the beginning of 2006, Joana Rios commenced to write and compose the songs which would become part of her first album of original work, Parallel Universes | Universos Paralelos. In early 2007, Joana Rios received an invitation of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce to have a concert in New York where she would present for the first time songs of Parallel Universes which would be released latter that year. In January 2008 Joana Rios kicked off Parallel Universes´ tour with a gig in Leiria, held at Miguel Franco Theatre.
