“My Pocomanian Girl” is a personal tribute to a musical and spiritual culture of Jamaica. Telling stories or writing songs regarding human endeavor through any art form is fundamentally based on principles adapted from an ancient ancestral place to use as a template for communicating history, tradition, and culture. In other words, it’s a form expressed best through words and music, language, dance, and other visual arts forms and the adaptation of modern technology. My early inspiration and expressions, observing mother leading her congregation into a higher spiritual realm of worship, songs and dancing to the rhythmic pulse of drums, tambourines, the clapping of hands and voices calling and responding to the lead vocalist chant were invaluable. That’s still influencing my songwriting in a modern way more so today than in former years. A history of suppressing a truth from the springtime of my life and how I felt after she left home to travel the world caused me to dig deeper to uncover a hidden self with lots to share with humanity. This album reveals another side of my storytelling through songs. It will keep you dancing, your head bopping and feet tapping to the beats layered with a lyrical message. It's a collection of recordings that tell my story of a diverse musical heritage and exposes most of my compositional approach to words and music and the taste of the Afro-Spiritual roots and pulse within a context that’s incredibly liberating. As it were for my mother and others who came to her for guidance, it’s now taken me in a direction as a storyteller, poet and songwriter to forge forward with my music for the world to experienced and enjoy regardless of preferences to any one genre. To continue denying myself from rediscovering my truth, would rob future generations. That could mean a missed opportunity to teach from knowledge and not express all the music residing within my soul and how vibrant the cultural history of long ago proved impactful. Evidently, those formative years developing introduced lots of happiness and some sadness. Altogether, they’ve brought me to the present, and the recording of this album will last for many years into the future. Dad once said to “write your story and live it to the fullest and have no regrets of doing so and certainly not of your past.” It was he who inadvertently motivated my action to pursue a music career. Indeed, I am grateful now that I’ve become thoroughly vested musician today. On the other hand, it was my mother who influenced the soul in my songwriting and the completion of this album only because she was a Pocomanian spiritual leader. The message of this body of work is simple. First, it’s about my Pocomanian experience and influence and secondly, crying out to all people to come together and live as one in, love peace and happiness but most importantly, to refrain from the posture of war facing our troubled world.
