"Lenkkodek: Open My Ears" brings together two acclaimed Canadian artists, whose combined love of cultural music traditions has thrust them onto the world stage for the past 20 years. Lenka Lichtenberg’s rich vocabulary of Eastern European and Middle Eastern traditions, combines with producer and remixer Eccodek’s musical love of India, Fiji, Mali, Turkey, Nigeria, Rwanda and beyond. Here, Eccodek (aka Andrew McPherson) uses his immense studio craft to reframe 4 of Lenka’s most powerful songs. The two, however, were not content to just reinterpret the past and so set about creating a new piece for this release. The result, ‘Still Hopeful’, is a haunting, heart-opening call to optimism in these disillusioned times. First cut ‘Open My Eyes’ builds a percussive juggernaut over pizzicato strings, dubbed out vocals and headspinning polyrhythms, while ‘Vayn Fun Lebn’ channels fiery, gypsy grooves over punchy brass and a driving bass line. On ‘Raise A Cup Of Kindness’, the cinematic, dubwise production takes the listener on an ethereal ride, evoking McPherson’s deep love of Massive Attack, Mad Professor and Cheb I Sabbah. ‘Arum Dem Fayer’ densely layers percussion and beats under Lenka’s soaring vocal to craft a club-influenced funk workout that ends in a jaw dropping soprano sax meltdown. Lenka Lichtenberg is an award-winning artist (two Canadian Folk Music Awards, Independent Music Awards) with 6 solo albums to date; she also leads her 5-member, live ensemble Fray, featuring some of the finest players in the Canadian fusion scene. In 2016, UK label Arc Music released her album ‘Yiddish Journey’ and will also release her upcoming Czech language album, ‘Masaryk’. Andrew McPherson has released 7 albums as Eccodek, 4 solo albums, been nominated twice for a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammys), received 2 Canadian Folk Music awards and produced countless remixes for a who’s who of the global music community including, Vieux Farka Touré, Transglobal Underground, Dub Colossus, Delhi 2 Dublin, Syriana, Desert Dwellers, MC Yogi and more. His work has been released on esteemed labels including Buddha Bar, Six Degrees, White Swan, National Geographic, Modiba, with critical press from The Boston Globe, Toronto Star, Exclaim, CMJ, fRoots UK, Huffington Post, BBC and CBC.
