"Dave Bernal has been at the forefront of promoting, playing, and supporting California Country music and carrying on the tradition of California legends such as Buck (Owens), Merle (Haggard), Wynn Stewart, Rose Maddox, and Dwight Yoakam. He is helping to prove that great country music with integrity is being written, sung and played right here in California." - Ronnie Mack, Ronnie Mack's Radio Barndance/ legendary Los Angeles country music promoter. Just Dave Band is a country band from Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Led by singer/songwriter Dave “Just Dave" Bernal, the band's high-energy performance gives a "rocky" edge to country music, capturing the best of California Country's sounds, blending Bakersfield and Laurel Canyon with a little Texas outlaw and Nashville harmonies thrown in. Dave has played harmonica on the stages of American Idol and 30 Seconds to Fame. His harmonica is also currently featured on shows like Sons of Guns, Bar Rescue, and Treehouse Masters, as well as on plenty of regional and national albums. He served as music consultant for the upcoming independent film "Highly Functional", starring Bruce Campbell. He taught the Ash V. The Evil Dead star how to be a has-been country star. Dave performs “Smile from Beer to Beer” (from Rules to Live By) on-screen as a featured song for the film. Soon, he will even share the stage with Boy George and Culture Club at The Forum and Hollywood Bowl. With previous albums, Dave focused more on blues and rock music, but the country he was raised in has always been in him. Rules to Live By is an ode to his love of Americana and California Country, showcasing his harmonica skills, vocals, and distinct song-writing. His songs are honest reflections of what he knows and experiences. Dave says, “I don’t write ironically or symbolically; I write matter-of-factly. I tell stories.” The music blends high-energy rhythm with warm, laid-back vocals, and frenzied harmonica/guitar soloing to accompany. The combination of Dave's “bigger-than-his-body” voice, with a rock-edged band, bring a new twist to the world of the classic country troubadour sound. Dave calls California’s San Fernando Valley home, which serves as a backdrop for his original songs. Many are a tribute to the “Laurel Canyon sound” made famous by singers and songwriters of the 1960s. He recently created the #CaliforniaCountry podcast; it features the best in national and local talent with California roots. Just Dave Band also hosts weekly in-the-round nights, welcoming musical vets and encouraging young local acts.
