Carla White专辑介绍:by Ken DrydenVeteran jazz vocalist Carla White tried something a bit different for her eighth release, omitting a pianist entirely while utilizing some of her favorite musicians, including guitarist John Hart, bassist Dean Johnson, drummer Matt Wilson and on a few songs, trumpeter/flugelhornist Claudio Roditi. The lack of a keyboard produces softer backgrounds for White's emotional interpretations of ballads like the powerful "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" and the less frequently heard "It's Kind of Lonesome Out Tonight," though the highlight may very well be her heartbreaking rendition of "May I Come In?" She dives head first into Mose Allison's humorous ditty "Your Mind Is on Vacation" (which she may have chosen after encountering one too many overly loquacious club customers who inevitably asks for a table near the stage), which is also highlighted by choice solos from Hart and Roditi. White scats up a storm in a brisk interpretation of Wes Montgomery's "Four on Six," the equivalent of a vocal master workshop for would-be scat singers. Recorded just a couple of days before the 21st century day of infamy, 9/11/2001, this long-delayed CD will have great appeal to those already familiar with Carla White and also serve as an excellent introduction for those who haven't yet heard her expressive voice.
