SUMMARY: "Fandango" is one of four works by Anne Carr-Boyd on a CD which also features compositions by her student Soo Teon Choi ("Flamenco Fantasy"). Gross, Holland and Allworth provide works in a variety of styles for the Sydney Mandolins, and the CD concludes with Suites 3 & 4 of film music by Strahan titled "The Australian Ark", written for Robert Raymond's documentary series on Australian wild life, shown widely on TV here and abroad as "Shell's Australia". Suite 3 "The Coming Of Man" is based on musical scales used by peoples of Arnhem Land. Suite 4, "Land Of Birds" for a trio of flute, clarinet & cello is performed by Neville Amadio, Donald Westlake and Robert Miller, then of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. MORE ABOUT THE MUSIC & PERFORMERS: ANN CARR-BOYD (b. 1938). 1998 is the year of Ann Carr-Boyd's 60th birthday and this compact disc features one of her early works as welI as two recent compositions. Track 1 - FANDANGO (1982)Her association with the Sydney Mandolins dates from 1980 and her second work for the group, FANDANGO, was commissioned by Director ADRIAN HOOPER in 1982. The 1982 recording of FANDANGO made by the Aistralian Broacasting Corporation (ABC) with the SYDNEY MANDOLINS has since been released on a number of JADE CDs and led to its inclusion on an ABC Breakfast Classics CD as well as the Secondary Schools publication "In Tune with Music" by Ian Dorricott and Bernice Allan (McGraw-Hill 1994). (This was the result of producer ROBER ALLWORTH'S initial enthusiasm in including the work on an early Jade compact disc.) Tracks 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 - BENDOOLEY VARIATIONS (1997). The Bendooley Variations is Ann's tenth work for the Sydney Mandolins and was composed for performance on the opening night of the Third Composing Women's Festival at the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Sydney, in 1997. Bendooley is th name of a property near Berrima which was settled by William Cordeaux early in the 19th century. Bcndooley Hill and Bendooley Street, Bowral, are also named after this property. Since moving to the Southern Highlands of New South Wales Ann has become increasingly interested in many aspects of the unique and beautiful area. Track 3 - BROWN PANSIES (1997). Romantic in style the work was composed in 1997 for vocalist, teacher and artist Corinne Laird, who wrote the words. The wide range of the voice part was written to take advantage of the singer's voice. THE PERFORMERS - CORINNE LAIRD studied singing with Elizabeth Todd at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. She has featured in ABC broadcasts and in performance has specialised in Lieder and Oratorio. She currently teaches at Frencham School, Mittagong, NSW. MICHAEL TAYLOR is a graduate of the Australian International Conservatorium of Music, SydneY, majoring in piano. A winner of many prizes and scholarships, he has distinguished himself both as pianist and organist and is in demand as recitalist and accompanist. Track 2 - SOO YEON CHOI - FLAMENCO FANTASY (1997) Although composition has occupied the major part of Ann's working life, she has also taught composition and piano since the age of twenty. She says that her pupils, who have come from such widely varying backgrounds, have enriched her Iife and stimulated her own artistic ideas. The work included on this compilation is an example of her interest in fostering and encouraging music by other composers. FLAMENCO FANTASY was composed by her pupil Soo Yeon Choi in 1997. Soo Yeon has been studying with Ann at the Australian International Conservatorium of Music since she came to Sydney from Korea five years ago. Her music has been performed in public and broadcast on radio station 2MBS-FM and in 1997 was included in the Third Composing Women's Festival. ERIC GROSS (b. 1926) Track 9 - MINIATURE FOR RAY (1994) This simple, relaxed composition was, in its original version, a piece for solo piano, dedicated to the pianist Ray Lemond. This arrangement has been specially created for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins, as a small gesture of thanks for their support of Australian composers. DULCIE HOLLAND (1913 - 2000) Track 10 - SUMMER SERENADE (1997) This delightful miniature was written at the request of Adrian Hooper for his group. The music contains some of the composer's loveliest melodies. ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 11 - FIVE BAGATELLES (1996). Molto Lento/Grave/Poco Allegro/Molto Lento/Grave. These short movements are characteristic of the composer's mature style. They are written in twelve note form and vary in tempi and texture of instrumentation. DEREK STRAHAN (b.1935) Composer's notes for "The Australian Ark" Suites 3 & 4: Between 1969 and 1973 I had the good fortune to compose music for a major documentary series produced, written and directed by the distinguished author/film producer/former journalist and war correspondent, ROBERT RAYMOND. This 13-part series was first telecast on Australian television on Channel 7 under the title "Shell's Australia" in acknowledgement of the program's sponsor. The series offered a comprehensive overview of the Australian continent, its formation, its wild life and its first inhabitants. It was, and still is, widely screened overseas, both in toto and as individual programs. The music was recorded progressiveIy in seven 3-hour recording sessions at Studio 301, EMI. Two suites of music are presented hjere, with the kind permission of Opus Films, named after the program's workng title "The Australian Ark" - denoting the isolated environment in which the evolution life took its own individual course after Australia separated from the original supercontinent. Gondwanaland. Track 12 - "THE AUSTRALIAN ARK" SUITE N0.3 " THE COMING OF MAN" (1973). Music written for the episode tracing the arrival of man on the Australian continent.Same of the themes are based on musical scales used by peoples of the Arnhem Land region, including a mode whose "tonic" is on the seventh from the didjeridu's pedal note. The titles of the I0 episodes give an indication of program context: Faces in Stone; Steps in Time; Dreamtime I; Dreamtime II: Faces in Stone (variation); Dance I; Dance II; Dance III; Faces in Stone (variation); River. Track 13 - "THE AUSTRALIAN ARK" SUITE N0.4 "LAND OE BIRDS" (1972). Music written for the episode surveying Australia's varied bIrd life and habitats.
