简介

Memorial in Two Parts (1988), for violin and piano, was commissioned by the McKim Fund at the Library of Congress. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a departed friend of the composer -- I. the pianist Andrew Wolf, and II. Bowdoin College faculty colleague Gabriel Brogyanyi. The composer draws from figures found in the Schumann Piano Quintet, the Gershwin Piano Preludes, the Mozart Requiem, Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea, and Shepherd on the Rock of Schubert. A Garden for RKB (1989) was composed for Robert K. Beckwith, who had a great love for both gardening and opera. The work is an intersection of metaphors and associations from the two worlds, from waltz rhythms, and motives created musically from letters of names. Four Maine Haiku (1984) is a solo piano piece written for the pianist Kazuko Tanosaki. The movements are based on haiku poetry, and each lasts for 17 measures. Dream Music with Variations (1983) was composed on an NEA consortium commission for the Atlanta Virtuosi, Garth Newel Chamber Players and the New England Piano Quartet. It attempts to combine elements of dream-like fantasy and a series of variations proceeding simultaneously. The variation element is derived from a 12-note row. By the end of the piece the row assumes the shape of a simpler tune, harmonized with major and minor triads. Fragments and snippets from Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Schoenberg, as well as Chopin and Liszt are all hidden in the texture. (Album cover art by Dorothy Schwartz)
