简介

Spanish Wave has the legendary violinist and composer Dr. L. Subramaniam performing some of his finest fusion pieces in collaboration with music legends including George Duke, Larry Coryell, Jorge Struntz, Stanley Clarke and Alla Rakha. Spanish Wave was written by Subramaniam for a festival appearance in Norway in 1982. Inspired by the Spanish dances, he created a powerful melody in the backdrop of rhythmic guitar. Ninth House has a nine beat pulse, subdivided as 2-2-2-3. Subramaniam composed this rhythmically complicated piece in Los Angeles in 1974. A five beat figure repeated four times is set against a four beat figure repeated five times. Winter in Austria is a haunting melody written after a visit to Austria in winter. The piece starts off with no perceptible beat and slowly expands into a ballad-like song. Set to 7/4 time, Seventh Heaven has a strong jazz orientation combined with the traditional South Indian percussion trade-off. The Indian vocal percussion alternates with the tabla and mridangam, and slowly moves towards a wonderful crescendo with the trade-offs becoming shorter and shorter. Chameleon is built over an eleven-beat cycle that later transforms into a four-beat cycle. By a unique technical device, Subramaniam at times seems to be able to play five notes at once. This is another composition that was written for the festival appearance in Norway in 1982. The slow four-beat pulses of You and Me has a quality that almost suggests a tango at certain points. Another work written for the festival in 1982, Dancing Beauty brings a Scandinavian flavor to the album. Subramaniam's contribution during the closing theme statement is an exceptional example of his technical mastery.
