Man is Not a Bird points off in a variety of exciting directions, while having its feet firmly planted in its own unique indie-rock aesthetic. Three vocalists trade turns spouting mania here, and the result is an esoteric mix of sugar-rush guitars and drum chaos, of crooning and yelping. The opening track, Broken Vocal Cords, races out of the gates bubbling with energy, drums veering toward the brink of disaster. Eye Contact pounds unrelentingly forward. Safeward launches into the stratosphere and sails far onward. Owing as much to Pavement as to They Might Be Giants or Brainiac, relying as much on melody as on dissonance, Man is Not a Bird is an exciting debut from Percolator.
