With mood-core outfit Languid, Rebecca Ryan has found just the right home for her allusive songwriting and eerie singing. Her songs take place in a no-woman's land between desperation and revelation, preserving just enough clarity within her fragile images. She's got the vocal chops to sing jazz, and her unpredictable phrasing swims and sways around her bandmates' low-fi Morphine-esque funk. There are so many reasons to listen to this band. For one thing they like the music they're playing. This might sound like a strange thing to say, but the fact that all the parts fit together so well, that it's quiet music but not slow, that it's music you want to turn up because well really, it's not quiet at all it's music to get as close to as possible. These are the things that make me think these people like playing music, and they like that they're playing it together. For another thing, Rebecca Ryan's lyrics and melodies are some of the most beautiful things I've heard. Sure, the melody might make the lyrics sound innocuous or timid, but once you start pulling all those words together, there's something soulful and real about what they have to say. And that's when you realize that those words are saying exactly what the music has been telling you all along. They caught my attention when I was just casually going through the bands listed on the website. The thing that stood out most was the complex percussion and the vocals. After listening to "Tracks" I soon knew why Rebecca Ryan was nominated for Best Singer/Song Writer. From groovy rock to a pleasant vibe with some deep meaningful lyrics and an awesome percussion track for each song, this band is sure to please any music fan.
