The Society of Finnish Composers celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1995. As part of the festivities a series of recordings featuring active members of the society was launched. Volume 1 is devoted to chamber works and includes two string quartets from the 1990s - one by Usko Meriläinen (1930-2004) and the other one by Erkki Jokinen (b. 1941). Another work of chamber music from the 1990s is Mikko Heiniö's (b. 1948) Piano Quintet. Joonas Kokkonen (1921-1996) wrote a number of important works in the field of chamber music: his neoclassical Piano Quintet from 1953 is a fine example of that - and his breakthrough work as a composer.
