Mark Boling, Keith Brown, and Rusty Holloway have played music together since the mid-1980s, soon after they began teaching jazz at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In addition to various configurations of faculty ensembles, they have played together in the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra for over 10 years, backing a long list of jazz greats. Working together in many styles — New Orleans, blues, rock, funk, free, fusion, mainstream, and big band — they have been blessed to play regularly with musicians Donald Brown, Gregory Tardy, Zim Ngqawana, Bill Scarlett, Vance Thompson, Jack Coker, and Jerry Coker. This shared wealth of experience influences their ongoing musical conversation.

The Boling, Brown & Holloway Trio has had a home on Thursday nights at the Baker-Peters Jazz Club in Knoxville since 1997, allowing them the opportunity to develop their trio concept and sound. During the Baker-Peters years, they have honed a repertoire of original music and standards with roots in the great guitar trios led by Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, John Scofield and Pat Metheny. The TRIO has become a musical oasis, revitalizing, and allowing space to grow — an expression of musical LIFE.
