The NEW MINSTRELS ‘70s started as a musical merger of 3 college boys whose early forte was doing the campus folk concert circuit and of 4 rock-radical girls whose roots in pop music come from past links with various top choral groups, and of 8-strong instrumental backup band each of which is an accomplished artist.

Fuse them all into a tight singing community whose high-calibre harmony derives from a living together,singing together,sharing together thing. Imagine this groovy group’s stage style as Sergio Mendes going Stylistics, then becoming Rock Flowers, and on to mod Ray Conniff or a bouncy Bette Midler to Pointer Sisters to Love Unlimited, with the Philadelphia Sound in-between; while at the same time you image them out as Western pop-powered, soul vibrant young Filipinos. You got in your hands then the make-you-feel-brand-new New Minstrels ‘70’s.

The group comprises of Eugene Villaluz, tenor, Vic Baclagon –tenor, Cesar de la Fuente-bass. All from San Beda College. And there’s Ding Mercado who sings baritone. The girls : Aida Balmaceda, alto, a Maryknoll social work grad, sang with Pattern People, Family Portrait,Progeny. Aileen Dolina, alto,a UP (University of the Philippines graduate. Annette Belen, soprano, a UP Conservatory of Music product,sang with UP Madrigal Singers, UP Concert Chorus, New Dimension, People Like Us, Circus Band, Bayanihan Folk Troupe. Louie Reyes,soprano, a Holy Spirit music bachelorette, teaches music at St. Mary’s. Mr. Junn Guevara is the manager.

BUHAT album by the New Minstrels is a first of its kind for this sensational group showcasing all Filipino classical hits into a more upbeat style. This CD features a compilation of distinguished songwriters such as Mike Velarde, Leopoldo Silos, Constancio de Guzman and Manuel P. Villar Sr.
