Led by lead singer/guitarist Brett Williams, who also is the band's primary lyricist, Mighty Joe Plum deals in fairly standard, guitar-based alternative rock. There's an earnestness in its music that is reminiscent of early U2. Like early U2, the quartet sings about big issues but rarely gets beyond simple observations. Williams' vocals fall somewhere between Michael Stipe and Eddie Vedder, which should make him familiar to listeners. "Live Through This (Fifteen Stories)" made a slight impact on radio and is one of the better tracks on the album, along with the driving "Irish" and the sparse, somber "I Fell In."
