When BIKINI GOSPEL was first released, in 1987, it was cited by the Los Angeles Weekly as one of the top 10 releases of the year. And no wonder -- The Rub's unique, pop-oriented perspective split the difference between postpunk and power-pop -- early Beck meets 20/20 -- finding a distinctive place in the indie universe. It showed deference to a previous generation's AM-radio tastes (vis-a-vis their cover of Neil Diamond's SOLITARY MAN, as well their original THE DEATH OF POP, which, with its folk-derived sound and catchy delivery, would've fit very comfortably on the airwaves in an alternate 1966, or even 2016.) But songs like FASCIST and WHO KILLED BOB CRANE? have harder templates and a less-sunny outlook, while still retaining a sense of (dark) humor, about them. The dichotomy between light and shadow, bitter and sweet, afford the listener a complex and challenging experience.
