The Hip Hop Transformation (THHT) is a summer program, offered by the Cambridge Community Center that teaches teens the history of hip hop culture, the role it plays in their lives and in society as a whole, and equips teens with the skill set to write, record, and perform their own pro-social hip hop music. Our program philosophy rests on the idea that there are many ways to deliver 21st Century Skills to teens and that it is our responsibility to deliver these skills in a way that the teens are ready receive. Hip hop is an innovative and ideal avenue to engage teens to deliver these skills effectively. Our motto goes, “THHT, we’re a Fam!” and that culture runs throughout the program. With this culture the teens are held accountable not just by the adults working with them, but also by their peers who are collaborating with them to create the best final product possible. The accountability, collaboration, and leadership skills that the teens receive mirror many of the 21st Century Skills that young people need to prepare themselves for a career. The Matrix is the 4th album completed by THHT and was recorded in the summer of 2016. The major themes the emerged from this project are racial injustice and the prevalence of police brutality in our society. The students also looked inward and addressed personal feelings of love, rejection, hope, and despair. Overall, The Matrix has something for everyone to relate to and connect with.
