In 1997 Antipodean Records future founder Mark de Clive-Lowe was hosting a weekly jam session in Auckland, New Zealand, tearing through jazz, latin and funk jams to captive audiences buzzing off the local scene. At one of these jams, a fresh-faced, barely out of high school kid got up on the bandstand, took out his alto saxophone and BLEW. It was one of those special occasions where you just knew this guy had mad talent and was destined to go places with it Fast forward ten years and Lewis McCallum is one of the new breed of NZ producer/ musicians mixing his love of jazz, latin, funk and soul with the global culture of samplers, turntables and the boom-CLAK. Hes guested with MdCL on record and on stage as well as with NZ artists Opensouls and Hollie Smith, and even managed to sneak in a session blowing horn for restless soul man Phil Ashers remix of Vanessa Freemans The Way. Now Lewis debut single is ready to drop worldwide 100% self-produced, the two cuts showcase a new talent ready to bring his sound to the world. Fly or Die is a new school hip hop club banger not a million miles away from Sa-Ras cosmos, but nurtured in a makeshift home studio on the other side of the planet complete with p-funk squelches, electronica vocal production and one serious head-nod. Look Around has Lewis in broken soul mode with vocalist Cherie Mathieson taking the mic. Combining his beats with saxophones, filters and synths, Lewis comes up with another great track thats sure to get the bounce factor going.
