Various Artists – What What EP In South African terms this is a coming together of three of the biggest and longest standing names on the house music scene. Three DJ’s who were there at the beginning of the deep house movement come together to give us a truly versatile EP. Side A’s ‘30 Something’ by Erefaan Pearce is so named for to very obvious reasons; he is about to turn thirty at the time of production, and has cut many of the samples from a thirty year old vinyl cut from his collection. A synth heavy bully of a tune, it also marks Erefaan’s first foray into long, string like synth pads. Side B is the production debut of old friend and long time collaborator Ryan ‘the dentist’ Dent with Craig De Sousa. ‘Sous Man’, originally completed in 2006 this is again the product of two veterans of the scene tipping their hats to the likes of Depeche Mode. Produced with an Access Virus A synth on lead, a steel string guitar on the licks and the pentatonic scale front of mind, this is a welcome calling card to all those born before 1985.
