简介
It was 1995 and renowned fiddler and multi-instrumentalist was looking for a new direction to take Newfoundland fiddle music fusion. He found it with a local St. John's rock band Drive. They formed Kelly Russell & The Planks and began gigging around town and beyond, with shows in Toronto and Vancouver. The group's one and only CD, Smashed Hits, has been hailed by many as a landmark and hugely influential album, taking contemporary interpretation of traditional music to new and dizzying heights. The album features tunes learned from fiddle masters Rufus Guinchard and Emile Benoit, and the "godfather of the Newfoundland accordion" Frank Maher (who was himself a Planks member for a while). There's also vocal offerings from Sean Panting, also the electric guitarist, while Chris Batstone and Adam Staple cover Electric Bass and Drums. After 1998 the CD was no longer available until now with it's digital re-release.
