简介
This short project is filled with versatility, hot beats, strong rhymes, and a message that has full intent to touch and alter your soul. Instantly upon playing the EP you can tell the changeup and difference from sound compared to the mainstream norm right now. What exactly is JFields trying to get at with his title and song construction of Tug of War. The war that JFields is speaking of is the war that we face daily as individuals between the flesh and the spirit. Everyday our pureness of love within our heart is tested with the influences and ideas of the world. For example, our natural ability to love and care about others is sabotaged by greed, insecurity and self hate. With the current climate of the world and racial issues I’m often confused by my people that are participating in the revolution. I’m no expert and don’t claim to have the answers, but I believe our first steps must involve unity and organization. Unity and organization is hard for us to grasp and capture, when everything around us promotes differences in class. I recall a moment when I heard a young lady say she wouldn’t text or even consider dating a person that was not “team Iphone.” All because Iphone has the exclusive feature of displaying a different color text box when conversing with someone that is not using an Iphone. Instantly, we see a material item placing a boundary between people to even be able to communicate. Some of us find it humorous, or may even agree with her action, but I challenge you to not be so shallow and really not let a phone determine the type of communication or relationship you can hold with a person. If we want to see a change in the world, we must change our actions. If we want to change our actions, we must change what we put into our minds. Rather that be with music, movies, videos, or whatever. We must be very careful what we choose to expose our minds to because eventually it will come out to manifest. So let’s take violence and drug distribution within the community. Let’s say that we really wanted to stop seeing young brothers killed by other brothers, and we wanted to see people living healthy drug-free lifestyles. How would we really be able to accomplish that goal, but at the same time listen and support artist that promote and glamorize this type of lifestyle in their music, and furthermore, you have DJs and promoters that support and play that type of music over music with a purpose and message while giving you a nice sound to vibe and dance to. Since when did having fun have to involve heavy drug use, or feeling like a big time drug dealer or boss, or feeling like people are hating on you, etc. I thought having fun involved enjoying the people around you, and the experiences you can build together because of the individual personality and gifts you all individually possess. Here lies the tug of war. Am I going to fight and promote unity and justice, or am I going to “turnup,” “live my life,” to the very music and ideas that implant the seeds for us to kill and destroy our own community. In terms of the Bible, it states that He does not want us lukewarm. We either have to be hot or cold about what we’re going to do and how we are going to live. You are only who taught you until you reach out for your own information and knowledge of self. Just because someone told you that you have to sell drugs to make good money and make it in the hood, does not necessarily mean it’s true. Just because someone told you that you have to go to college and get a degree to be successful, does not necessarily mean it’s true. You have to have a wealth of knowledge about yourself, and your purpose in this universe, and use your gift(s) that God has provided you with to leave your impact. We as a people cannot continue to accept the bullshit from entertainers and other influences that promote a lifestyle that gets regular everyday people debt, prison time, and death when we actually put it into practice. Ironically, these are the end results for the people that do make all of the big time money, and choose a path of destruction and chaos. Rather you want to accept it or not, those things that you listen to is impacting your mind, decision making, and thought process about life matters and subjects. Why do you think infidelity and divorce is at an all time high? Damn near every song promotes cheating, hooking up, and merely sex with no emotional attachment. Sex is not perceived as a symbol of unification and bond, but instead a pleasurable treasure that we all must acquire at any chance we can get. There is no easy way to fight and battle this tug of war. The evil of this world is so embedded and masked within society with smiles, pretty faces, big houses, fine cars, and status that it is often hard to identify. However, you must make the conscious decision today as an individual, and decide that you will no longer just accept the bullshit that other people tell you, but you will now seek out for your own knowledge, and you will begin to think freely for yourself, and not let your thinking be easily controlled or influenced. You must decide that you won’t just fit in with the crowd, you won’t just do something because it makes you feel good, but you will fight the flesh and stay strong in your spirit to do what is right for the everlasting good of humanity. So what can you do to help fight this tug of war battle that we are all fighting in this world. An old African proverb stated “the destruction of a nation begins in the homes of its people.” So if the destruction of a nation can start in our homes, then the construction and empowerment of a nation can start in our individual homes as well. Bring back the true element of family, communication, and quality time. Take the time to read and write with your kids everyday. Teach them the difference between right and wrong. Turn off the television and radio, and you as a parent, uncle, aunt, grandparent, talk and spend time with that child. Have the difficult conversation with your family members, and neighbors and friends that may be of different ethnicities or racial backgrounds. Do what you can do on a daily, individual basis to make a positive impact. This war will not been won and conquered overnight, but if each of us can begin to improve ourselves and those around us on a constant, consistent basis we can begin to see the functional, impactful steps necessary to make real change and improvement within our minds, spirits, and hearts; which can then allow us to function at a mental capacity that is competitive to that of the oppressors strategy to divide and conquer. If we can keep our self in check everyday, and remain conscious about the things we listen to, watch, or even eat we all can begin to take control of the tug of war that we all battle as individuals and as a group of people. Stop taking all of your life advice from Facebook, music, television, magazines, or anywhere else. Start seeking knowledge for yourself from within and the universe. If you just sit and listen, God will speak to you. To my Black Conscious radicals that are calling for a race war, and the use of violence to get our message across. I ask that you be a bit wiser and strategic. I can tell that you have not fully thought out the plan and circumstances. For one, if that was your plan and idea, you are messing up because you’re already behind enemy lines, and you rely on enemy resources and supplies to live and survive now everyday. We have no farms, no factories, water resources. If we went to war, and the enemy decided to shut down all the banks and grocery stores then what? We have no food to feed our people, and money to get access to resources we need to survive. The war that we fight is not a physical war and battle, but it is spiritual and mental. We have to be smart and use our minds to get what we want, and beat the game with its own strategy and plot. In closing, as you battle with your tug of war each day I pray that you remain encouraged, strong, and faithful. Understand, we all fall short and the war will come with peaks and valleys, but keep on going everyday. Love your neighbors, family, and friends, but more importantly love yourself. Love, happiness, and peace doesn’t require a ton of money or worldly possessions. It just requires knowledge of self and understanding of God’s love and grace for our lives. Stop living your life based off the norms and standards of the internet and television world. Stop allowing these media outlets share our identities and principles that we instill within ourselves and our next generation of thinkers. Free your mind and spirit today, so we can take control of this war, and really get down in the trenches of deep change for our society in this Tug of War.
