Gishiki is the soundtrack to a Japanese Sci-Fi movie that has yet to be made. A perfect mixture of augmented koto & harp, vintage synthesizer, and windchime sound design for grey rainy days. First is that the songs each began their compositional arc using one of the three variations on the Japanese Hirajoshi 平調子 pentatonic scales/tunings. As the compositions evolved, I then introduced more standard western modes to create a unique tonal palette that worked well with the synthesizers. Lastly, I recorded/sampled my collection of pentatonic windchimes and bamboo instruments, like the Malaysian angklung, to add a unique sonic element to the mixes. All the songs blend seamlessly into the next creating a listening experience ranging from tranquil ambience & delicately melodic to climactic surging synthesizers.
