简介
"If one was to describe Gran Fortune's debut LP to a curious listener, it would be like bringing a projectile missile to a gun range. But that's a good thing." These are the words of a recognized engineer that had chosen to be anonymous, probably because they did not want direct association with the content discussed on the album. Nonetheless, Politically Erect takes the hip hop music industry, deciding to hold it and it's listeners hostage for approximately 60 minutes, the leaves them with the conflicted feeling of either excepting what's beyond status quo versus accepting mediocrity. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, Gran Fortune, Producer/Emcee/DeeJay, became a disc-jockey at 8 years old, then breaking into playing the piano at age 10, and discovering and learning how to emcee by age 13. It was at this age where he fell in love with hip hop and started his passioned career as a music producer. Influenced by the sounds of J Dilla, Timbaland and Pete Rock, Gran crafted his production to emulate these greats. However, upon studying music via secondary education, the unequivocal challenging musical stylings of Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Jon Anderson and Frank Zappa pushed Gran's creative element to make a distinctive mark on his style, thus carving his lane and cementing his space as a music producer. Gran has been in "ghost" producer for several years, with silent (behind the scenes) production, remix and engineering credit for some the industry's biggest and notable artist, signed and independent. His first love is behind a mixing board, yet his voice and lyrics are what had been in demand from others familiar of his talents. As reluctant as he was, Gran decided to finally put out his first mixtape, 'Too Popular To Get Away With Vol. 1,' to test the climate of listeners. It received general acclaim, not only for its production, but for the song content, structure and mood. Gran decided that his first LP should continue in similar theme. Relentless in his style dubbed "Progressive Nostalgia," Gran deliberately chose to go against even his own convention of modern day production, creating a new, yet remarkably familiar sound. The beats are organic and hypnotic; thumping drums, haunting, yet melodic keys and synths, and rolling, journey-carrying bass lines. The lyrics are even more audacious, as he directly takes aim, and calls names, at those who he believes do not do right by others. He delves deeply into various topics of taboo, and is not not afraid to even highlight his own shortcomings, as embarrassing as it may be, all for the sake of good, honest music. "I could have went the current route," he states, "and easily do what's making waves, but considering what the world is like right now, I will regret not giving an audience what's on my mind right now, rather than giving it to them later when things are worse." He recruits the talent of Sadat X, Punchline, Bobby Stone and DJ Mr. Phantastik, as well as various others to complete the package with their own unconventional contributions. However, unlike his mixtape, production is all his, making this debut very personal. The music is very soulful, the lyrics are passionate, and vibe is rhythmically elegaic. It is his message done on his terms: dark, sometimes frightening, unapologetic, often familiar, but always authentic.
