My first memories of music were my grandmother’s piano, an old 78 rpm record player, and her Ideal Music Box. Listening for hours on end to the various songs that this music box played, this sophisticated instrument exposed me to the classics that would become part of my life and my life work. This 19th Century Swiss Music Box made By Jacot (circa 1892), called the “Ideal Musical Box – Playing any number of Tunes, Patented” This music box, measuring 10.5 inches high and 30 inches in width in a walnut finish case, came with three 11 inch interchangeable cylinders—each able to play six melodies. The unit also had a song counter, a dampening function which softened the sound, a repeat switch, and a tempo control. This was one of the top of the music boxes of its day.
