Jan Olsson’s songwriting is a search for meaning and significance. The son of a Holocaust survivor, his life journey has been shaped by the caring and compassionate voice of his mother, who imparted to him a strong sense that there are always answers to questions that require exploration. Olsson’s songwriting and performing career began in 1991, when the band Steeling Time was formed along with co-founding member James Tomlinson. The duo released their album Hands of Time in the year 2000 accompanied by internationally acclaimed conductor Boris Brott and his 70 piece National Academy Orchestra. Olsson’s first solo EP release A Complicated Life confronts issues of the heart. Along with production engineer and songwriter Richard Jackson, Olsson has carefully crafted a unique sound by combining elements of vintage rock and third world percussion. The results are a collection of songs with an unexpected edge and provocative themes. Inspired by the music of Blue Rodeo and Neil Young, the EP delivers an eclectic mix of alternative rock songs that intentionally leave the listener questioning.
