Recorded over the winter of 2009, the EP 'Don't Think You're Too Good For Country Music (Just Because You Can Rock & Roll)' is, in effect, a progress report on Stephen Brower & the Silent Majority. The band's last record, Neon & Dirty, stretched the band's folk rock into ever heavier sonic territory, with tracks like "The Bottom" and "New Tattoo" introducing a hard-edged, defiant sound for the band. The shows the band did in support of that record also found them on bills with hardcore luminaries the Meat Puppets and experimental blues icon Bob Log III. The very direct influence of those bands, and Brower's increasing affinity for the barbed guitar work of Stooges' Ron Asheton, led to the driving, propulsive songs that take up Side A of this EP. Meanwhile, Brower maintained his life-long love affair with classic country music, a hobby that often finds the songwriter poring over obscure LPs from the genre. One such LP, Bobby Bare's oft forgotten 'Me & McDill,' features the track that gives this EP its title and is responsible for the record's aesthetic duality. For all of Side A's snarl and fury, Side B's lone track is a lilting, acoustic reading (country, if you must) of Aimee Argote's "Last Bastion of Worthlessness." Argote, of course, is the fiery visionary behind North Carolina garage/punk band Des Ark. That her wrenching ballad comprises the 'country' side of this EP is the very kind of wry conceit that makes Stephen Brower & the Silent Majority a band worthy of your continued attention.
