This CD is a live recording from a concert given on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Christ Church Cathedral, Louisville, KY. The concert featured music spanning nearly a thousand years with the common theme being light. The recording begins with chants from Hildegard of Bingen, a Christian mystic and composer from the 12th century, unmatched in her unique compositional style, and concludes with Egil Hovland's contemporary arrangement of the Phos HIlaron, "Stay with Us, Lord Jesus." The Cathedral Choir is the resident choral ensemble at the Cathedral, singing all principal services. The choir also sings services for the Diocese of Kentucky, monthly Evensongs, and the annual Service of Les sons and Carols. A mixed choir of adults, the group sings music from all eras, with approximately fifty percent of their repertoire by American composers. Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral is the oldest house of worship in Louisville, being established in 1822. It is a beautiful space visually and acoustically, making it an excellent environment for making music, both instrumental and choral. The Cathedral is proud to continue a long tradition of excellent music performed by fine musicians with a supportive congregation. In addition to regular Sunday morning worship, the Cathedral hosts many services in the evening led by the choir, with Evensong, Lessons and Carols, and Christmas Eve being among these significant musical offerings.
