Decidedly non-commercial, Suicide is hardcore dancehall. Pounding drum and bass driven beats frame the rebel voices of dancehalls hot stars and undiscovered talents. The gravely vocals of deejay Mega Banton may be familiar from his 1994 crossover hit, Sound Boy Killing. Jamaican producer Dean Mundy, pairs the toaster with the edgy vocals of fresh singer/songwriter Patchy on the assertive, Crying Time. Deejay Lexxus proclaims boldly his Thug Life status on a raw and realistic track tempered by the smooth hooks of Mr. Fresh and O’Neil Shines. Dubbed Jamaica’s “rude boy band” by Rolling Stone, T.O.K. mix four part harmonies, Craig T’s textural rapping, Bay-C’s deep rhymes and searing vocals from Alex and Flexx to define Freaked Out. Two tracks deviate slightly from the albums gritty approach and deserve special mention. Tanto Metro and Devonte, well know for their catchy love songs, Everyone Falls in Love and Give It To Her, drop their signature deejay/singer combo on Ready for Love. Giving Praises by as yet undiscovered Beeno Ranks passionately illustrates there is more to ghetto living than tragedy. Delly Ranks Vexx and Buss, Zumjay’s Tell Me, Kip Rich’s Why, Showki Ru’s Certain Gal, Benzly Hype’s This Stick and the rhythm track instrumental round out this 11 cut album. Suicide, the first release by the West Indian based, Vigilanti Records, was recorded exclusively in Jamaica and makes a great addition to a true aficionado’s collection.
