Marianne Nowottny has created some of the boldest music of her generation. Her deep, voluptuous voice has often been compared to Nico, Patty Waters and even Om Kalsoum. Nowottny has released numerous CDs over the past sixteen years, most notably Afraid of Me in 1999, Manmade Girl in 2001 and What is She Doing in 2007. These releases all showcase her experimentation with different genres—jazz, blues, pop, avant-rock—and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, classical Chinese and Indian music. Her recordings have been reviewed in numerous publications, including the New York Times, WIRE, Billboard, Record Collector and Plan B. Recently she provided songs to the Abaton Radio Theater CD release Lost & Found: 3 Works by Rosalyn Drexler, instrumental accompaniment to Provocative Dramas by Arch Oboler, the original soundtrack to Lauri Bortz’s feature film Kung Fu Kitty, music and vocals for a CD collaboration with poet and art critic Barry Schwabsky. Her current projects include a 7” vinyl release of Strawberry Fields Forever and Tomorrow Never Knows with the Sensorium Saxophone Orchestra, and the soundtrack for Flood & Drought, an ongoing series of documentary shorts addressing environmental issues in the United Kingdom. Marianne Nowottny is also an accomplished visual artist whose phantasmagorical paintings have been exhibited in New York galleries. She has illustrated books, created artwork for CDs, received portrait and mural commissions.
