简介
After five decades of rock ‘n’ roll, what is seen today its a attempt, increasingly frantic, to create something new. Limited by the frontiers of intention, many contemporary bands have sinned by lack of spontaneity or the pragmatism of the rules that were created for a musical style which only goal was never to follow rules. Formed in 2004 in the city of Campinas, Sao Paulo state, Brazil, SLIPPERY goes against the grain of this tendency on modern rock with a work that, admittedly, does not have the slightest intention to create, recreate or innovate anything. All they want is to have fun doing the music they most like to listen and play: the hard/heavy from the 80ths. Fabiano Drudi (vocal), Dragao (guitar), Kiko Shred (guitar), Erico Moraes (bass) and Rod Rodriguez (drums) are not afraid of being labeled as dated or nostalgic and captures the same sonority that projected to the world names like Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Dokken, Bon Jovi and Ratt. The band’s first studio recording was the EP Follow Your Dreams released in 2007. Bringing five tracks, even the low budget was not problem to avoid the work to have great reviews in Brazil, Europe and Japan. The good repercussion of the debut also yielded some opportunities for the band, like the invitation for opening act shows for Jimi Jamison (ex-Survivor, Cobra), Jeff Scot Soto (ex-Malmsteen, Journey, Talisman) and L.A. Guns, besides some participations in important festivals in Brazil, like 'W.O.A. Metal Battle' in 2008, when the band was one of the finalists. After the great reception to the EP and high level shows – besides the shooting of the video clip for the song “Two Young Hearts” – SLIPPERY now releases its debut full length album. Titled First Blow, the album was recorded at Kidman Studios under the supervision of the experienced Brazilian producer Atila Ardanuy (Dr Sin, Anjos da Noite). According to the guitar player Dragao, Atila’s work was primordial for the musicians to reach the sonority they wanted. “We first met Atila through Ivan Busic of Dr Sin. Atila is an extremely experienced and skilled producer. He spent many years working with Anjos da Noite and Dr. Sin. When we thought about talking what we expected for a song, there was Atila doing exactly what we had planned. It was easy and fun to work with him”. First Blow brings 10 tracks that covers the entire eight years career of the band. Among them, three tracks also appeared on the EP: “Follow Your Dreams”, “No Time to Sorrow” and “Two Young Hearts”. “The three songs were remixed, remastered and had some details changed in comparison with the originals”, explains Dragao. “As for the new tracks, they show how much we have evolved since the release of the EP, since it was a relatively long time. We went through many experiences that have strengthened us as a band and this naturally made the songs more technical”. Another highlight in First Blow is the inclusion of the cover for "Night Of The Demon" of the British band Demon, one of the representatives of the "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal". Dragao explains that the intention is to make homage to one of the bands that they most like. “During the album recordings, we contacted Mike Stone (Demon’s manager) and said about the interest to record that song and to take it as part of the album tracklist. He liked a lot the idea and gave us the authorization. When we finished the mastering process, we sent him the final version and got his enthusiastic approval” In terms of lyrics, SLIPPERY does not invest on the typical Hard Rock themes like nightlife, girls, parties and trouble with police. There are lyrics with positive messages, love stories and some that pictures the own universe of the band. “The creative process is absolutely free”, clarifies Dragao. “All members have total freedom to write a lyric and there is no rule beyond the good sense. We indeed try to transmit this positivism, more specifically lyrics like 'Sons Of Freedom', 'Follow Your Dreams' and 'No Time to Sorrow' has a direct relation with that, others not so much”. But if in terms of lyrics the band is an exception to the rule, the cover of First Blow could not be more suggestive. For Dragao, it is a synthesis of the album content. “The cover makes clear the explosive content of the tracks without neglecting the malice inherent of the style. The photo was produced by Fabio Barella and the art by San Martins”. Even with a little time since its release, First Blow has been unanimously well received for all the critic and public. One proof that, more important that to intend create or innovate, is to make music from the heart. SLIPPERY now is focused on the promotional shows for First Blow at the same time the band is planning to shoot a new video clip and writes new material for the next record.
