The Van gogh letters project features original compositions that use the writings of Vincent Van Gogh to his brother, Theo as inspiration The suite contains an unusual instrumentation; oboe, english horn, bass clarinet, played by Charles Pillow, the keyboards of Jim Ridl, and the accordion of Gary Versace. Using a blend of composition and improvisation, ambient synth sounds, and electronica, it is sometimes difficult to tell which is improvised and which is written. The melodies were composed by “speaking the words Van Gogh wrote with an instrument” NEA Jazz master David Liebman says of it, “its absolutely gorgeous, like Weather Report from another planet”
