The If You Wannas are an Asheville-based rock band that dabbles in sarcasm, fun, heartbreak and the experimental. After working for an Australian Record label, Mixmasters, Ryan Cox (Highs in the Low 30s) returned to Asheville to take a job at Moog Music. Cox’s time in Australia sparked inspiration for the material that comprises his current sound. Intrigued by the material, drummer Jacob Baumann (the Trainwrecks) began a working relationship with Cox. With Trevor Stoia (Trevor Trio) joining in on bass, they worked up a thirty-minute set in a handful of practices. Gavin Connor (Devon Green) was to join on Moog Synth and guitar in the summer of 2007. The quartet thirsted to invent a signature sound, drawing on influences like Velvet Underground, the Cars, Pavement and the Pixies. They’re known for energetic and chaotic performances that range from aggressive noise-rock to pop ballads, often times in the same five minutes. They’ve performed all over Asheville at clubs like the Grey Eagle, New French Bar, Broadways, Bobo’s and Fred’s Speak Easy. Their performances are fun and engaging in a way that’s too often lacking in the current rock scene. They’ve just released a self-titled EP with nine songs.
