简介
It was the summer between 6th and 7th grade and my parents had made it perfectly clear: learn a musical instrument or become a teacher’s aide. I ultimately think my venture into songwriting was born out of a healthy fear of grading tests for Ms. Eckle. The following fall my mother enrolled me in a classical guitar class, rented me a ¾ sized nylon-string guitar, and my life as I had known it was forever changed. To appease my parents I learned what I had to learn: site-reading, scales, modes, arpeggios, and a bunch of classical guitar pieces. However, the first notes I ever played on a guitar were my own. From that very first time my fingers clumsily stumbled across the fret board, I was writing original songs. My friend ben and I would sit up on his roof, write music, and play our compositions for anyone unfortunate enough to walk by. Over the years I would play in a number of bands and write hundreds of songs. I learned to play some more instruments and I learned how to produce records. When I was 18 I started sending some songs to Nashville and it wasn’t long until a few people took notice. They taught me how to refine my songwriting, and I signed my first publishing deals. Over the next decade I would have my songs recorded by a variety of artists, as well as used in TV shows, independent films, instructional videos, and commercials. Most importantly I ended up with an endless number of stories to tell, and met a lot of great people along the way. In a the last few years I have seen many changes hit the music industry and there are many more to come. And I’ve changed too: that ¾ sized-nylon-string guitar is now a martin dreadnought. The pen and paper has become an iPad. But the way I go about what I do will never change. When inspiration hits, I’m still that same kid back in 1995, sitting on the roof, and putting stories to song. And just like those days, I’m always waiting to see who will walk by.
