More…. Once again (as so often in my piano music), the Sea and its blue water waves provide the inspiration and themes to my piano pieces. (I guess growing up on an island and my years in Florida have had their influence on my mind and music!) This nicely upbeat progressive ‘bop’ on solo piano started the August 21, 2014 record session here in my studio ‘RobisonCrusoe’ in Florida during the afternoon and evening hours. I went on to do a several longer takes but this one is only 3 minutes and was done in 2 takes – the first one missed recording and then I thought I better get it recorded. Luckily the 2nd take was a little more varied which I thought at first was no good but in the end tightened it down to 3+ minutes whereas the first was too long anyway. I remember beginning on F# minor over G# in bass and that’s about all I remember now! The bass is really starting to groove and grow with me as I get a definite original conception of a progressive walking bass that tends to move more in intervals this time then steps and often involves octaves. The feel here is that the bass lines keep the piece varied as I intentionally tried to make the bass conflict with the ‘key’ of the chord (at least modally) so that it would not get stagnant on root bass or ‘in key’ harmony. It ended with a nice gentle swing and a ride that seemed to me to be a bit like riding swells on my surfboard just offshore (going up and down) – I also like the sort of ‘leaping’ (intervals) in the melody that I hope to find time to transcribe. In the session it ended quite abruptly and immediately segued into the next piece which is the long ‘Celtic-derived’ melody that will be the title track to the album: ‘ISLANDS IN THE MIST’… coming soon as the next post on my CDbaby Artist page.
