If Bob Dylan met the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nile Rogers, this is probably the album you would end up with. With topics varying from celebrity culture, to Edward Snowden, via prostitution and relationship breakdown, this debut album from Tom Weiss provides a more upbeat tone than previous releases by the Unbelievers and exposes more of the songwriters' skill than we have previously heard. The album could in many ways be summarised by the lyric 'promises, lies, and regrets' of the opening track, but many of the topics are not obvious to the casual listener. Soaring melodies of tracks likes Believing and Graveyards of Her Mind may initially lead listeners to underestimate the lyrical content but these tracks bear closer inspection and although - like Dylan - he is not the world's most technically proficient singer the raw emotion in his voice overcomes any rough ages that remain.
